My Diplomacy House Rules

The following is an outline of my personal House Rules which apply to every game I'm gamemastering, unless changed in the comment to the game which is included in any game listing. Current version: August 17, 2000.

Dedication to the game

Note, that a Diplomacy game can take several months. With signing on to this game you state that you are willing to play until the end.

Submit moves by the deadline. Players who are constantly late disturb the flow of the game. It is a matter of fairness to submit orders in time.

Grace periods are short - make sure you send in tentative orders early on.

Purposely missing deadlines for any reason is strictly forbidden.

Game parameters

Initially, deadlines can usually fall on every day of the week. If one or more players request that deadlines should fall only on weekdays, the settings will be changed accordingly.

Deadline extensions will be granted generously upon request provided a good reason is given. Requests should, if possible, be sent via "press to m" a few weeks beforehand, and another reminder should be sent shortly prior to the requested extension.

Dedication settings will not be altered unless all currently active players and the gamemaster explicitly allow it. For some games, exception policies may apply at the discretion of the GM.

Make sure you obtain a current listing of the game before signing on. House Rules may be altered by the game comment.

Press

All press concerning the game must be run through the judge whenever possible. In particular, players are not allowed to communicate by any means other than email and judge press.

If a player is late he must not send press. Also, it is not allowed to send press to a player who is late. Player who have submitted orders may continue to negotiate with each other after the deadline.

Broadcasts or press to multiple players (including the GM) may be ignored by the gamemaster. If you need to contact me, press to m.

Resignations and Other Improper Behaviour

If you need to resign, notify me as soon as possible.

If you have ever played in one of my games and have resigned or gone abandoned, I reserve the right to exclude you from further games. If you want to play anyway, contact me before signing on.

Some players are banned from my games for other improper behaviour. These players have been informed about it. I will resign them from any of my games if they show up.

In gunboat games, it is not allowed to resign and take over your own position for strategical reasons.

I sometimes set up games for friends on request. It is understood that no advantage whatsoever may be taken from the fact that other players are known to you. This applies in particular to gunboat games.

Adjudication

Adjudication of orders is done by the Judge using its built-in adjudication algorithm.

General

I expect players to stick to the above regulations, and to the EP House Rules if not altered above. The EP House Rules are available from any Judge.

If you have any problems signing on, or have any questions, contact me.

Pascal.
